Concrete Countertops as an Environmentally Sound, Natural Alternative
Concrete can be one of the greenest and environmentally friendly materials for countertops. Consider the following:
- First, if you live in the Metro NY NJ area and buy a top from us, 97% of the materials used will come from a radius of under one hundred miles. Unlike most stone countertop products, there is no carbon footprint from transporting slabs from half a world away and no need for deep earth excavation.
- Our concrete countertops will outlast any cabinets they cover. A well designed concrete top will become a treasured component in your kitchen or bathroom. As Fu-Tung Cheng stated: "Good design is sustainable. It means people will appreciate something over a long period of time."
- We use green fabrication practices for all our tops. For example, all the water used for grinding the tops is collected in a recycle container for use again in grinding or in the next mix. Our sink molds and casting sheets are used multiple times. We carefully calculate the necessary batch quantities in order to avoid wasting any material after the top is casted.
- We have eco-friendly concrete mixes available, including Eccorok, the only high performance, non-Portland based countertop cement that meets the stringent demands of everyday use. Eccorok replaces 100% of the standard portland cement in a mix and allows you to have a top incorporating over 98% recycled materials
- Our standard mix design incorporates VCAS, a pozzolan made from glass fiber manufacturing waste. Use of this product in our mixes allows for a direct reduction in the portland cement required, and also saves land filling of waste glass fiber that would otherwise not be repurposed. VCAS is a certified 100% post industrial recycled product and can contribute points to the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for sustainable building.
- We offer mixes which include recycled glass and other post industrial materials. In fact, if you would like, we can even incorporate your own recycled glass materials into your project.
- We offer tops fabricated with GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) technology. These tops can be made lighter and require less Portland cement than traditional concrete counters.
